SI: Please tell us a little about yourself.
Melanie: My name is Melanie, and I’m a recent college graduate (I graduated in January). I am currently living in a suburb of Portland, OR. I’ve been artistic for my whole life - ever since I could hold a pencil. And, I’ve been drawing birthday cards for people for as long as I can remember. I did not start creating the kind of cards I’m selling until my junior year of college when I was able to purchase the Adobe Creative Suite.

SI: What is the name of your business? and what do you create?
Melanie: I run a little stationery shop online through Etsy called “Eyelet Sage Studio.” All of my items are paper related. My main merchandise is greeting cards, but I also make journals and when the end of the year comes, I’ll start selling calendars.
SI: What inspires you?
Melanie: You know when you were little and you’d lay on the ground and look up at the clouds and figure out what they looked like? That’s basically how I design - by seeing the designs in other things. As silly as it sounds, basic shapes really inspire me. Most of my designs start with one shape that I tweak and build off of that. I like to think that the simpler the shape, the more interesting the design can be. I also sometimes will do illustration/line drawing based work, and that is inspired by the natural world around me.

SI: What is the best thing about what you do? and the worst?
Melanie: The thing I love about my work is the actual working! It’s a bit cliche, but there’s something exciting from coming up with the idea, putting into design on the computer, and seeing it finally printed in a tangible form. I’m also really into branding, so it’s been fun to even design my letterhead, invoices, mailing labels, etc. Everything about what I do is design related, so it’s enjoyable. The worst part right now would probably having to be patient to wait for sales. I just want to package everything up and send them out to people for them to enjoy!
SI: When not creating, what do you like to do?
Melanie: When not creating for my shop I’m usually reading or writing or hanging out with friends and family. I’m also really into painting and drawing and occasionally sewing, though I don’t sell those items.

SI: Any future plans you care to share with us?
Melanie: Right now I’m in the works of designing eyeletsagestudio.com, which I hope to have up and running within the next month. I won’t sell directly from that site, but it’ll be a landing website where people can learn more about what I do and who I am. I’d also love to get to the point where I’m selling enough to at least make a small profit. Ultimately, if I had my dream, Eyelet Sage Studio would be my full time job and maybe even turn into a brick and mortar store. But time will tell, right now I’m just enjoying the process.
Many thanks to Melanie for sharing so graciously of herself and her art. Please take a few minutes to visit Eyelet Sage Studio to see more of Melanie’s fabulous artwork. Also be sure to check out Melanie’s blog.
